Subject: [!] Netter's Dinner @ MacWorld

It is time once again for the Netter's Dinner @ MacWorld.  This  is the
second of three calls for reservations.  Feel free to invite your friends.

MacWorld is Wednesday, January 5 through Saturday, January 8.  The dinner
will be held Friday the 7th at the Hunan on Sansome at Broadway at 7:00
after the show.  We will meet in the lobby of Moscone Hall at 6:00 (the time
the show ends) and will begin the walk to the restaurant at 6:30.  It can be
cold, so bring your coat.  It's about 15 blocks (if that) and only takes
about 20 minutes to walk.  It's quite a sight seeing a line of net.geeks
wandering across town, but of course geeks are tame in San Francisco.  ;)
Dinner should start around 7:00 and there will be a no-host bar available
before and after dinner.

The buffet won by a narrow margin and I was able to get assurances that the
meal would be up to the standards of the sit down meal last year.  It will
be cheaper too, at only $14 a head, and there should be more food available
too.  We'll be charged per our reservation count though, so don't RSVP if you
can't come.  I'll be taking names and numbers of no-shows!

Our awards show will frivolous and silly, in true Usenet tradition, but we
need more categories and nominees or I will be forced to do it all myself
and the fun will wear thin quickly.

If anyone is bringing a portable printer, I could print labels off my
PowerBook and we could have email address nametags for the affair.  How
totally geeky, eh?

For that matter, if you have a PowerBook I recommend bringing it, as I hope
to set a record for the largest all-PowerBook Bolo game.  We'll be running
PhoneNet and LocalTalk wiring (I have a conversion cable so we can link the
two and put people on whichever side they are equipped for), so feel free to
bring whatever connectors you have, as long as they are not terminated end
connectors (since we need to hook people together and only 2 people can be
the ends).  If you have extra connectors then bring them, as there are
always problems and more is better.

As usual, this is a gala affair, so dress casual.  ;)

Tell your friends and acquaintances.  I will be accepting reservations up
until Wednesday night.

	Timothy Eckel of the Commodore Amiga submitted several 3-D
stereoscopic images on GEnie.  COINS is a 3-D image of several rows
of American Silver dollars.  I am submitting this as a dedication
to those who have difficulty in seeing ANYTHING with the standard
'dot' type stereo images. Viewing this image will reveal a row of
silver dollars without all those silly dots. ;>p
	However, if you cross your eyes a bit, they will take on a 3-D
effect. This file was decompressed with MacLHA2.10.2 and then
converted to the Mac world from Amiga IFF via
GraphicConverter1.6.2. View with a suitable GIF viewer, such as GIF
Converter.
	No compression is necessary since this is a GIF picture.
Process it with StuffIt Expander or any other suitable deBINHEXer
utility.

It still freezes up on my Centris (Quadra) 660av.  When I use it as a
demo, it works fine, but if it gets selected by Randomizer in After
Dark, my computer will freeze up.

The module is written by Karl Bunker.  Unfortunately, it doesn't seem he

Version 1.2 of MacHTTP, the WWW server for Macintosh platforms is now
available. It is recommended that all current users of MacHTTP upgrade to
this version as it fixes some problems that prevented MacHTTP from working
with some WWW clients.

What is it?
MacHTTP is a server for Macs participating in the World Wide Web (WWW). It
allows you to serve hypertext documents to other WWW users from your
Macintosh. This version allows you to serve text documents (like HyperText
Markup Language documents) as well as binary files (GIFs, f'rinstance). In
addition, MacHTTP supports the execution of AppleScripts that can return
HTML. This allows you to generate documents on the fly from data base
queries, etc. This server works with the standard WWW clients as well as
clients like Mosaic that support embedded graphics and it supports HTTP
version "0.9".

The server places a very small load on your Mac, both in memory and CPU
requirements. It should run fine in the background on any Mac with MacTCP
installed and System 7.

MacHTTP is being written by Chuck Shotton, from the University of Texas
Houston Health Science Center's Office of Academic Computing. Questions can
be addressed to cshotton@oac.hsc.uth.tmc.edu. The latest version of MacHTTP
can FTPed from ftp.uth.tmc.edu in the public/mac/MacHTTP directory.

 I just wanted to way what my experience is with 3M disks. I recently bought
a pack of them (10 HD) and at least half of them didn't even survive the first
format and most of the rest were unraadable in a few days. I think I only
have one of them working now.
 So if you're thinking of buyimg them, hane a chocolate instead!!

Quite true, Rich. For a II to run a SuperDrive, it needs the IIx ROM's,
including the SWIM chip that handles the FDHD.

An option is Applied Engineering's AEHD PlusDrive ($300 plus a $20 MacII
cable at the usual mail order suspects). It may be cheaper than the FDHD
upgrade, but the drive is external and you miss out on the IIx ROMs. May
be a consideration if BIL wants to expand memory past 8M.

Ain't a PC alive that can physically read a Mac 800K disk. Apple got the
extra 80K (over a 720K MS/DOS disk) by varying drive speed. Any software
your BIL gets will only see a 1.4M disk. I'm certain of this. I may not
be right, but I'm certain.

Besides, I've found that the Mac is the more capable machine for inter-
platform file and data conversion.

Nick, you might want to contact Fabrizio Oddone (simula3@di.unito.it)
about your problem.  Fabrizio is the author of SetupPartitions and
can probably help you out.

If HD SC Setup 7.2.2 told you that the media wasn't suitable, it might
mean that it saw an non Apple drive.  There is a patch around somewhere
to allow HD SC Setup to operate with non Apple drives.

Have just bought a so-called 14" (in fact barely 13") Apple Colour Display
-- after the death of my (barely three-year old, not very much used and
with a screen-saver on it at all times) B&W 15" Apple Display. The vertical
edges of the windows are CONCAVE. I went back to my dealer here in
Strasbourg who said:
"That's quite normal, them Displys is manufactured somewhere in China, so
whadd'you expect?"

My questions:
1. is this that 'normal'?
2. anybody know how to remedy this situation -- preferably by a soft?

A friend of mine tried initializing his internal Quantum 1 Gbyte drive with
Apple HD SC Setup 7.2.2, patched according to this message:

Apple HD SC Setup now "sees" his internal drive, but gives an error after

Happy new year.
I am looking for two very different types of software, and I wondered if any
of you have suggestions as to the best one to use.
First I would like the Finder 7.0.0 to show the date last modified in the
following format: 12/29/93 Wed.  Is there software that can change the date
last modified to be shown in that format under View by Date?

Second, for someone who just has the Quicktime 1.6 extension, what software is
best for viewing .moov files found at FTP sites?  Can this software also read
JPEGs?

I have access to FTP and Gopher, if you can name any FTP sites to find these
software at.

Subject: Does rebuilding the desktop destroy custom icons (A)

Well, despite many peoples' claims and everyone's understanding,
sometimes rebuilding the desktop *does* destroy the custom folder
icons!

This happens when you have some init to load that accesses the disk
while loading; in my case, it's the CarpetBag init, which hunts for
folders containing extra fonts, FKEYs, et al.  Also, you have to have
things associated with the desktop rebuild just right - for example, a
simple rebuild probably won't be a problem, but if you use something
like DeskTop Reset (which really just nukes the desktop files,
allowing Finder to do a build-from-scratch), and then CarpetBag loads
and accesses after DTR but before Finder.  And it probably depends on
your software versions, and I wouldn't entirely rule out the phases of
the moon or the way you hold your tongue.

The explanation I've heard, as best I understand it, is this:

	- The display of these icons depends on two things: firstly, on
	  the presence of the special hidden file containing the icon
	  of course, but secondly on Finder noticing that file

	- ... which it only looks for on its first visit to the folder

	- ... which it determines by an "inited" flag

	- ... which *is* in the desktop files

	- ... and which gets set by the CarpetBag access, even though
	  Finder itself hasn't been involved

	- ... so when Finder does get to play, it doesn't notice the
	  icon file!

Ain't that a gagger?  This is arguably not the desktop rebuild's
fault, of course, but it sure looks lie that.

A way to fix this is to inhibit your CarpetBag or whatever during the
reboot involving the desktop rebuild.  Another way is to skip Desktop
Reset, allowing Finder to do the whole job so CarpetBag isn't involved
at the key moment.  Another is to use ResEdit's "Get Info" dialog to
clear that "inited" flag on the folder.  Then, close the parent folder
and reopen it, so Finder looks it over once again, notices the absence
of the inited flag, and does the job.

While you're ResEditing yourself to death, you'll also notice that
this special, hidden file containing the icon is actually named
something like

		"Icon
"

... which is doubtless why naming something else merely "Icon" causes
no problems.  I have no idea how you can name something that two-line
name to test the theory.

The custom icon file actually is five letters long in length, because at
the end is an "invisible" character. So naming a folder Icon will not

Hello there,

I know Epson makes a series of dot-matrix printers for the Mac.
Some questions:

-  Do the come they come with AppleTalk so that I can use them in a
   network?

-  Do they work with the regular Apple printer drivers, i.e. the
  'ImageWriter' and/or 'AppleTalk ImageWriter' drivers. Or does Epson
   provides its own drivers?

-  Does Epson provide a spooler, or do I need SuperLaserSpool?

If anyone has an e-mail or fax number from Epson to ask them directly.

I couldn't agree more. I called them and sent them e-mail in regards to
support for the PPI 14400FXMT modem (it only send/receives at 2400 with
their software, for some reason). I still haven't gotten any responses

Subject: folder named GWspooldir in trash & rogue dialog box (Q)

this folder showed up in my trash can. i would empty the trash, restart and
it would reappear. did this several times. it has not reappeared since I did
an option key - empty the trash.

I am also getting a dialog box that is about 1 5/8 inch tall by 4 1/4 inch
wide that seems to be tied to the System. I quit all apps and even option
command esc the finder and the dialog box remains throughout the process.

The dialog box has a text edit I Beam cursor that blinks but does not accept
any typing.

Disinfectant 3.3 finds nothing to I don't think it's a virus, probably some
rogue code.

Any ideas?

I remember someone asked about why GNUChess always played the four-knights
opening.  It only does this when you take away the "gnuchess.book" file
that came with the program.  That file contains different openings.

Moral: don't throw away (or rename) the gnuchess.book file if you want

Subject: Help Disk errors.

	This is a new one for me. A co-worker replaced the driver for the
internal hard disk drive with Disk Manager Mac v2.30 from OnTrack. Now the
computer will not boot on the hard disk. If we try to boot from a floppy
we get an "Address error" from the program "Finder." We have booted from a
system 6 disk and get an error id=02. And When booting from MacTools
emergency disk we still get an "Address error."

	Anyone ever had this? If so how did you fix it? Since we can not
boot on any floppy (or for that matter any disk).

Hi Mac people, since I saw some requests for these info, here they are.

When a new application is copied on one of the devices connected to your Mac,
the System takes care of updating the desktop file (or files in Sys 7) by
adding the record for this new application (there are some calls documented in
the IM books). This enables the
double-clicking-on-the-document-launches-the-appl feature and tells the Finder
which icon to display for a certain file (and some other things).
Each application may have a 'BNDL' resource (check it out with ResEdit) where
one can describe which icon to display for the files that have the same creator
as the appl, example: Creator:'ttxt' (TeachText), three different kind of file
1) 'APPL' -> tells which icon to display for the appl itself, 2) 'TEXT' -> the
icon to display for the standard document, 3) 'ttro' -> the icon for read-only
document.
So the Finder, each time it has to display a file on the desktop, reads this
resource in the related appl and finds the correct icon. This is why it takes
some time to open folders in which there are many different documents from many
different appls (at least on my LC).
When you get in trouble with the icons on the desktop it's because of 1)
desktop files are not updated (or corrupted), 2) AutoDoubler (or similar
programs) which sometime forget to update the icons, 3) the volume (the disk)
in which there is the appl that created that file is not mounted (that means
that the DT file of that disk is not read in memory)!

Bienvenu Jay asks why icons disappear after rebuilding the desktop, and for
a crash course in how icons work.

There are a few extensions that for some bizarre reason will cause icons to
go west. Adobe Type Manager (ATM) version 3.5 is one such; Adobe has an
upgrade to 3.6.

Failing that, try a nifty utility called Save-A-BNDL, available at Sumex.
It untangles any BNDL resources inside applications so that the correct
icons are associated with the application and its files.

I can give only a rough explanation of how icons and files are connected.
It's more or less like this:

Applications and documents all have signatures, which are in two
4-character parts: creator and type. An application's type is always APPL;
its creator can be anything but must be unique, such as MSWD for MS Word. A
document's type can be anything but is usually something obvious like TEXT
for text files, WDBN for MS Word binary files and so on. A document's
creator is the same as the creator of the application that created it.
Applications "sign" their files when you save them; in this way, the Mac
can tell which application should be launched when you double-click a
document. You can't change creators and types; the codes are assigned by
the software company

Within an application are several (often hundreds) resources of different
types, including ICONs and BNDLs (bundles). Resources are all numbered. So,
ICON 128 is probably the application's own icon; ICON 129 may be the
document icon, ICON 130 might be the preferences file's icon and so on. All
these live inside the application.

For speed, the Finder will copy all such icons into the Desktop database.
It does this whenever you rebuild the desktop or install a new application.

Now, how does the Finder know which icons to copy? This is where the BNDL
resources come in; among other things, they list all the icons to use. An
application also has a special bit called the bundle bit, which indicates
whether or not there's a BNDL resource there at all.

All these pieces must be in place and correct for icons to appear. If the
bundle bit is off, the Finder won't even look for BNDLs, never mind icons.
If the BNDL resource is missing or toasted, the Finder will skip it and
again you'll get no icons. Finally, if the icons themselves aren't there
and numbered the way the BNDL resource says they are, you'll get - right,
no icons.

Save-A-BNDL looks over your files and pieces all this rubbish together in
some semblance of order.

I have 3 Jasmine Drives, a DirectDrive 20, Direct Drive 40 and a MegaDrive (10
Meg removable HD).  I had the problem that they would not work with System 7.
First, I had to get rid of the Jasmine INIT.  Then I installed the Hard Disk
Toolkit driver onto the Hard Disks.  I still mount my MegaDrive with the
Jasmine Driveware 1.77 program, not the INIT.

They will know. My Jasmine bit the dust. The case and power supply was

Welcome to the Jasmine orphan family!  I have a DirectDrive 45 (still
running!)  that outlived the company that made it by several years!

You can probably get a system 7 driver version from the following

Subject: LaserWriter Utility doesn't see 8.1 selected printer

I installed the LaserWriter 8.1 drivers on my system a little while ago,
and found it works real nice. Fortunately, I didn't delete the old 7.x
drivers, because when I try to use the LaserWriter Utility to download
a postscript file to the printer, it asked me to select a laserwriter.

Once I selected the printer using the laserwriter 7 drivers, I was ok.

Is there a new version of the LaserWriter utility which understands
8.1 drivers or am I fated to have both versions forever?

The version of the LaserWriter I'm using says it's 7.1.

Subject: Mac won't shut down/restart Help!

Having solved the Tbad f-lineU problem (yes, it was an init
conflict, thank you to all who responded, particularly the especially
helpful Al Bloom). I now have a new perplexing, disturbing problem.

My Mac will _not_ shut down or restart (it's a IIfx).  What happens?
When I select shut down or restart the menus disappear, the hard
drive icon disappears, anything on the desktop disappears (three
aliases reside on my desktop), the cursor turns into a clock
cursor and then everything reappears.  This does not always
happen.  As best as I can tell this only happens after the Mac has
been on for several hours (please don't let this be a hardware
problem).  No dialog boxes, no cryptic error messages.  It just
cycles as I described.

Anyone with any ideas??  Should I start saving my pennies for a
new CPU??

Hello netter,

I'm interested in buying a golf game for a Mac IIci computer. I know of two
games: Mac Golf and PGA Tour Golf. I bought Mac Golf when I owned my first
Mac (SE) but this version does not work with my present IIci. I found this
game to be slow and difficult to install on a hard drive because of the
copy protection. So, I would probably avoid this game. As for PGA Tour Golf,
I downloaded the demo version from the archives and I like it although I find
the small screen size to be a problem. Does the full version have a 640 x 480
screen size?

I would appreciate any feedback from people who bought either of these golf
games. I'm particularly interested in: ease of installation on a hard drive,
realism, speed, color, 2 player option, and last but not least, price. Are
there any other golf games for color Macs?

I faced this problem years ago by bringing in my own Mac and using it at
work. I figured out how to interface into the existing systems and even had
a task based competition with the DOS guru to show that I could do
everything he said Macs were incapable of doing.

The straw that broke the log jam was my ability to reproduce a drafting
blueline on my Mac in an hour using MacDraw when the computer drafting
department had charged us 70 hours for the same drawing AND took days for
each change to the drawing. Our group got religion when they realized that
they could do drawings faster on a Mac in less time than it took to
describe it to the drafting group, get same day turn around, and save
bunches of money.

My suggestion is that your wife drum up support for a live test for her
group to determine which tools are most effective.

Pick an existing brochure and an existing advertisement. Have the people
who propose junking the Macs bring in the standardized platform with the
tools to do the job and then start from scratch. Have them hire a
consultant who does this stuff on a PC so that you and they know that the
PC person is going to work as quickly as possible.

Create the text or slurp it in from the sources that already supply text
(if text is created on a Mac, create it on a PC and start from there).
Create the graphics or scan them and manipulate them. Place the text and
graphics on a layout and then produce the composite outputs that you would
send to a printer for reproduction.

Time the results. Time is money. Be sure to get a quote from the PC
consultant as to how many hours of training would be required for a person
to reach their level of expertise.

If her company finds that Macs are more productive, and still chooses the
standard platform, she should find another company. Companies that make
poor business decisions go out of business.

   First off, a Happy New Year to all!

   I have an AppleTalk network throughout the house, connecting my office, my
wife's office, the living room (hey, with the PowerBooks, we might as wll be
comfortable!), etc., etc. It is, of course, convenient, but slow, being
AppleTalk. (Three permanent Macs, a perminent PC, Personal LW NT, and two
floating PowerBooks)

   I'd like to put Ethernet throughout the place sometime this year, but I am
somewhat concerned about the cost. With hubs alone being reasonably expensive
and all...

   Has anyone had experience with an "inexpensive" way of handling Ethernet? Is

I am trying to read binary files generated by a Fortran program on a Sun
Sparc (unformatted i/o, variable record size) on the Mac. There is no
problem on the first record. On the next record I have to skip 4 bytes
in order to read the values correctly but I always get an error about my
input request exceeding the record length. I suspect that it has to do
with differences in CR/LF between Mac and UNIX system. Can anybody
confirm? What is the simplest solution? (I am programming in Fortran on
the Mac too).

Dear Netters,
I am searching for the phone number of Midnight Software customer support.  Or
e-mail address (if anyone has one).  I have a few suggestions of how to make
DupLocator more bug proof.  Please e-mail your reply to this question.
I just scanned 200 disks and have no spreadsheet that can hold 6000 lines of
data.  Since DupLocator hasn't got its own native document format, everytime
machine crashes, I lose the scanned list of disks I can delete and move files
on.  If only it could save entire disk reports ;-(.  This is what I want to
suggest to the folks at Midnight, to make a native disk report file format
that can be saved from DupLocator so that if the machine crashes, I can reload
the report from DupLocator
 without having to rescan all the 200 disks again (1.5 hours work).
Please don't flame me, I am only trying to get this software to work better.
It would be a great software if it was crash proof.

System Error Patch is a new 7K extension on sumex that is supposed to make
your Mac beep 3 times and return to the Finder whenever a (normally-fatal)
System Error occurs. On my Mac Classic, with System 7.0.1, it beeps 3 times
whenever I intentionally Shut Down, and it did not protect me from the one
system error that I had.

Does it work for anyone else? Its author does not seem to have an e-mail
address.

This is a tale of frustration...

* May 1993--I call the local computer tech center on campus and ask
what, if anything, can I do to get beyond the 4 MB limit of my SE; the
guy calls me back and says that certain accelerators provide the
ability to run more RAM on the SE as well as giving it more speed. When
I consider that the price of the SIMMS chips themselves is
significantly higher than the price of a good accelerator, I start to
think, Yeah, It would be nice to have a fast machine.

* August 1993--after window-shopping prices for accelerators, I decide
on Applied Engineering's TransWarp 1340, a 40 MHz accelerator (no FPU,
no fast cache), and plan on having the computer tech center install 4 x
4 MB SIMMS (= 16 MB). They tell me they can order it and install it, no
problem.

* September 1993--The local computer folks inform me that Applied
Engineering has told them that the board will not recognize the full 16
MB...yet. But as soon as they get the upgrade ready, they'll send it to
me and after that I'll have a 16 MB machine. I'm not pleased, but the
competitor's board (the DayStar Universal @ 40 MHz) costs nearly $300
more, and I decide to assume this upgrade will not be vaporware. The
purchases are made, the local computer folks install it, and now I have
a very fast little SE with 4 MB usable RAM (12 MB hiding in the corner
somewhere). But it crashes constantly, at random times. Sometimes it
takes 4-5 rebootings before it will load all INITS and cdevs.

* October 1993--After looking for INITs that might be conflicting with
the AE '030 enabler INIT (yes, it requires an INIT) and finding
nothing, I bring in the computer to the local computer folk who
installed it. They tell me I have a sick hard drive and that apparently
the extra speed of the accelerator intensifies the problem.
Recommendation: a new hard drive. Okay (although I'm poor after buying
the accelerator and the 16 MB chips), so I buy the new disk. I bring
home with me a very fast little SE with 4 MB usable RAM, a new cheap 50
MB hard drive, and a tendency to crash every time I look at it.

* November 1993--I take the computer back to the local computer folks
twice, and each time they test the new hard drive and the computer
components; both times they insist that the problems must lie with my
software. I use an INIT Tracker which lists every single cdev, rdev,
INIT, device driver, etc., and the patches that are made. I'm no
programmer, but it doesn't look like an INIT conflict to me. I call
them a third time and only then do they explain that they have not in
any way tested the accelerator board for problems. So I have them pull
out the accelerator and ship it back to Applied Engineering. Now I have
a 2.5 MB ordinary slowpoke SE and a new cheap 50 MB hard drive, and a
large remaining debt on my credit card for the board and the memory
chips I don't have the use of yet. But it isn't crashing.

* December 1993--Applied Engineering sends me a postcard telling me the
long-awaited memory upgrade is available. It turns out it is a hardware
upgrade, so I have to send in my board. This is convenient, I tell
them, because they already HAVE my board! So please install the upgrade
AND fix the problem, okay? And send it back. On December 15, Applied
Engineering sends my back my newly repaired board...by UPS, regular
turtle-speed, no tracking, right in the midst of the Christmas season.
It finally lands about 12 days later. I take another day off from work
to bring it in to the local computer folks to install. It doesn't work.
Machine won't even "bong" now. They remove the board. Four months after
purchase, I have the same 2.5 MB SE with 8 MHz 68000 as I did before I
stuck over a thousand bucks into this mess.

This afternoon I tore into the BBEdit Extensions Development Kit.  I used the
HelloWorld module as a template.  The only external functions I used were
some of the <string.h> functions.  All is fine and dandy until I go to compile
it.  When I included the ANSI library, it gave a link error for every function
in <string.h> as undefined, plus reported CToPstr was undefined and main was
multiply defined.  When I removed ANSI, only the error for main disappeared.
Using ANSI-small instead still gave me some of the <string> functions and
CToPstr as undefined.

Is there something I forgot to do?  I was so enthusiastic about this (after not
having touched Think C since this summer).

First of all, let us get ONE THING STRAIGHT about Nisus:  Nisus has 2
(that's _TWO_) versions available, pending the imminent arrival of
NisusWriter.  BOTH ARE WORLDSCRIPT SAVVY but ONLY ONE (that's _1_) version
requires a dongle (hardware copy protection device).  The Limited Flag
version does not.  The Complete Flag Edition does.  The difference?  The
Limited Flag will not work with non-roman languages (except Kanji, I
think).  It is 'limited' to: the various Englishes, Finnish, French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.  The Complete Flag
version works with all language forwhich WorldScript  language extentions &
keyboards can be found.  To be fair to Alexei, he is working with Russian,
which does require the Complete Flag (and hence dongled) edition.

I just want to make that clear for the record.  This is not to flame Alexei
for not expanding on that point since after all he is really complaining
about WordPerfect in his post.

I don't understand this at all.  Granted, I am working on a 33 Mhz '040 mac
with a super-fast HD, but from what I can tell so far, WP is nowhere NEAR
this slow.  I may work a little different than youse do, but your times
seem incredible.  I decided to run some tests:  34 page file containing
many fonts of various sizes and styles and several graphics.  All times are
in seconds.  Times under .5 are essentially instantaneous (my reaction
speed ain't all that great!).

* - this demonstrates the effect of using the toolbox clickloop routine (by
Nisus and Word) for arrow key scrolling (it is slower).  I suspect it is
slower on purpose to retard scrolling speed for user-interface reasons as
it is not affected by bit depth.  Clearly WP uses their own routine - much
faster, but can you read the file as it screams by?

** - Although word 'finished' this QKey macro in 4 seconds by returning the
cursor context to the user, it still took another 8 or so seconds for the
pagination info to catch up.  This could delay the start of certain
formatting operations.  So there is an argument for this number to be ~12
seconds for Word.

*** - normal save modes were used i.e. not 'fast save' for Word and not
'compressed' for WP.

Observation:  Seems to me that while slower in some areas, WP is faster in
others, notably scrolling (which I personally consider a pretty important
thing!).  If you discount the arrow key scrolling as not being a true
benchmark (since toolbox routine seems to run with a 'governor'), then
Nisus is the clear winner in overall speed
_on_these_few_particular_benchmarks_ with WP and Word being pretty close
together.  Word is miserable in scrolling and saving, the latter being
perhaps the most important feature an application has...

I'll vouch for that.  The 68 page result of the above is only 246k in
nisus, 256k in Word but 498k in WP!  After converting to 'compressed' mode,
the WP file shrunk to 288k, which is not so bad, but saves in 'compressed'
mode drop to Word-like speeds.  All this makes me appreciate Nisus'
performance even more!

Can't say anything here, since I don't use WorldScript OR Russian.  I have
heard mostly excellent remarks regarding Nisus' WorldScript performance.
Maybe you should give Nisus Complete Flag a try?  Yeah, no one likes the
dongle, but is it _THAT_ much of a nuisance?  Whoops! I see you have a PB
180 so maybe it is.  Sorry.  :-(

Are there any Nisus Complete Flag users out there who can give us a report
on the nuisance factor of the particular dongle that Nisus CF uses?
Especially for a Powerbook user?

Well, to be fair, after installing MS Word to do these tests, it takes a
fair amount of real estate as well at 6.4 MB (Nisus is incredibly svelt at
less than 3 MB!).  Also, if you try to fix Word's miserable Save
performance by using the oh-so-dangerous 'fast save' format (Bad! Bad!) you
will find Word documents starting to fill up your disk pretty fast as well
as they get pretty huge in Fast Save format.

In doing these tests, I borrowed Word from a friend.  I hadn't used it
since version 4 when I discovered Nisus.  I noticed a few interface
boo-boos right off the bat:
  1--When you activate the 'Find' dialog in Word and it has a previous item
     in it's text field, Word always has the field UNselected and leaves the
     cursor at the end of the field, forcing you to backspace over the whole
     string to erase and then enter a new word.  EVERY OTHER SINGLE MAC
     APPLICATION that I know of with a 'FIND' feature comes up with the
     previous search target selected (highlighted) so you can just start typing
     the new target in and hit return.

  2--When you have a section of text selected that is greater than that
     displayed by the windowand then hit the up or down arrow keys, Word
     does NOT place the cursor at the correct places (which should be
     exactly at the beginning or end of the selection region), but instead
     moves the cursor only to the top or bottom of the window.  The left &
     right keys work correctly on this.

There were a few other behavioral quirks that I forget now, but like these two
they were pretty annoying.  They also are the kind of behavior that I see
all the time in Windows programs.  I suppose there are some preference switches
to alter the above, but not being a regular Word user, I just went with the
defaults, for the most part.

After reading this, I begin to wonder if there is a problem with WP and the
WorldScript Extention for Russian?  Perhaps something that is causing it to
slow down tremendously?  Have either of you complained to WP Corp?  The
performance you describe is indeed unacceptable and does not at all match
what I (and I think others) get out of WP.  WP Corp is famous for their
user support so you should at least give them a call and let them know
about your problems.  They may already have a fix for you.

Otherwise, you too might seriously start to give Nisus a look-see... :-)
